FGB Office & Warehouse, Clarinda Rd, Oakleigh South

FGB are a pharmaceutical company specialising in natural products – in particular eucalyptus oil. The successful growth of the business meant that development of the remaining vacant land on the existing industrial premises was needed, and FGB approached JDA Architects to design a major addition to the office and warehouse facilities to support ongoing expansion of the business.

The office was an addition to their 1960s factory building and was constructed at first floor over the existing car park, with a new double height entry foyer and reception that signposts it as a signature headquarters for the company.

A key element of the design brief was that the building should reflect the ‘natural’ philosophy of the business and products, by incorporating natural and recycled materials and sustainable elements into the design. It was designed specifically to reduce environmental impact and best utilise natural light. The use of natural and recycled timber that is noticeable throughout the interior and as an exterior facade treatment references the activities of FGB as Australia’s largest producer of eucalyptus oil and sets the building apart from the usual suburban offices lining the street.

“As a pharmaceutical company specialising in natural products – in particular eucalyptus oil – the intention for our new building development was to highlight the natural philosophy of the business by incorporating natural and sustainable elements into the design. We actively sought an architect who would understand our business philosophy and help us create an engaging, productive and inspiring environment for our team.

JDA Architects took the time to understand us and our values. They created a respectful process that sought our input but also presented us with new and innovative concepts. Some examples of this include our reception ‘woodland’ area – a wall panel of Australian timber and a crafted staircase – that allowed our history as a pharmaceutical company to be featured. The composition of the office area is spacious, light and encourages collaboration and communication. It is both a beautiful space to work in as well as extremely functional and has been very positively received by staff and visitors alike.

Harriet and the team provided a high level of attention to detail and their passion for the project was evident. They were dedicated in ensuring the project ran smoothly, to time and to budget – quite an achievement given the scale and size of the project. They collaborated closely with the chosen builders and formed a strong relationship to get the job done. We would definitely engage their services again if needed and would confidently recommend them as a team of choice.”
